It requires me a lot of time to rethink of posting this entry for the eye of public as to me personally it may sounds a little bit of self praise and superior.But,I think you guys deserve to know too about the reality of doing an internship especially for those that had not yet done theirs.But if you found that this writing does not amuse you,don't hesitate to leave it immediately.
First and foremost,being called as a trainee,regarding of what age you are,it sends a message to permanent workers that there is someone that they could rely on doing few simple things.(I won't say silly).These includes replace the toner in the printer, put the A3 paper inside the printer , make coffee, buy things at the cafe etc.The list must go on and on varies what companies you are in.This is an ancient fact and for you that never did such things even once in your life,be prepared.Those are only few things that you shall face inside your company.To some extend,you may end up accompanying your boss burning the midnight oil to get things done.Is this all wrong? Why a Software Engineer to be would be asked to do all those things? Aren't they suppose to sit at their cubicle and do some programming or worst , google some information?.My answer would be NO.Take it for the benefits of yourself.Sometimes, the workers are too busy to even remember your name.In fact they have so much things to do than to entertain you.Therefore, take this so called simple things to get closer to the workers around.It could be like ask their assistance on how to replace the printer toner.Or,if they required you to make coffee,would they prefer it with creamer or without creamer?The reason why I am saying this is not because I want to be their servant.But,think of that is the only way
to get connected with them.The asking for assistance with printer toner might leads towards knowing the workers better.Or,by making them coffee would gather all of the department in the pantry and all of you guys have a little chit chat.
Secondly,during internship,never expect them to give you task exactly like what your major are.Does not mean that if you are an IT Major,that does not mean you don't have to do Mechanical Engineer task.It could be more than expected if we are to talk about task given during the internship term.Their goal is,most of the time to get the job done.Therefore, be prepared and set in mind that,no matter what discipline you are,always up to any task given by your supervisor or other person.But,don't afraid to be honest if you are not capable of doing the task.Grab any opportunities that come knocking your door.But be wise and don't be too greedy to do all the task given.Be rational.As the saying goes, Jack of all trade,master on nothing.Optimistically saying,if you manage to complete the task given successfully,you will gain trust from them.And if you continually giving a good impression and gain respect from what you did,there will be no doubt that you will be offered permanent.But be careful playing with trust.Because trust is so vulnerable.Once it is broken,you can never undo it.It will remain a thousands pieces that you look with regret.
Thirdly,internship does not all about office , works , professional ethics and task.One word that you will often hear is networking.Internship also requires you to be independent and learn many skills of life.Contrary to life in universities, internship will make you surrounded by people from all walks of life.So as unique as who they are individually,so do their characteristic.
Always be ready for those with negative behaviour.But first,most of the time,have good intention when communicating with people.During internship,you will experience on how to cope with different people from different level of the "working-world hierarchy".Always be patient when dealing with people.Maintain a good rapport with everyone regardless of their background.Don't be too modest and humble as it will make yourself being the toy of the department.
All in all, the internship is like in a jungle.If you are not trained to be a prey , you will be someone else's meal.To some extend,the world is cruel where if you don't grab the opportunities,someone else does.But,don't focus on fear of being someone else meal but focus on hardwork and endless effort to have the best in your life.Because destiny of a man is long written in the hand of God.Is it you that responsible to determine what destiny will you lead.
